Limenitis arthemis astyanax
The Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) is considered to be the dark form or subspecies of the species Red-spotted Admiral. The white form, known as White Admiral (L. a. arthemis) is visually very different. The Red-spotted Purple occurs across most of the eastern United States as well as parts of Mexico. The individual in the first image shown here was near Woodville, Tyler Co., Texas, in June, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 l IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 2 shots of Red-spotted Purple were taken along the Savage River, Garrett Co., Maryland, in June, 2010, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark IV and an EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender and 580 flash.
The next 2 shots show a butterfly known as "White Admiral" which is considered to be a form of Red-spotted Purple. These 2 shots were taken at Kettle Creek State Park, Clinton Co., Pennsylvania, in June, 2010, with the same photo gear described above.
