| The Red-spotted Purple (Limenitis arthemis astyanax) is considered to be the dark form or subspecies of the species Red-spotted Admiral. The white form, known as White Admiral (L. a. arthemis) is visually very different. The Red-spotted Purple occurs across most of the eastern United States as well as parts of Mexico.
