The Summer Tanager (Piranga rubra) nests in the southeast United States and in parts of the southwest. It occupies riparian areas, mixed woodlands, parks, etc. The bird shown here, a molting male, was at Marathon, Brewster Co., Texas, in September, 2005. The young male Summer Tanager in the next 3 images was near Vanderpool, Bandera Co., Texas, in April, 2008. This is a bird which was hatched the previous year, thus the plumage that is still partially yellow.
