Desert Cottontail
Sylvilagus audubonii
The Desert Cottontail (Sylvilagus audubonii) is a resident cottontail from much of Mexico northward through the American west north to Montana. It may inhabit pinyon-juniper woodland, brush, riparian areas as well as true desert habitats. Its range overlaps with Eastern Cottontail and Mountain Cottontail and identification of most individuals is difficult. The first 3 shots of the Desert Cottontails on this page were taken near Balmorhea Reservoir in Reeves Co., Texas, in June, 2007 with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 100-400 F/4.5-5.6 L IS lens..
The next 9 images of Desert Cottontail were taken in March, 2009, in Catalina, Pima Co., Arizona, with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 500mm F/4 L IS lens.
The Desert Cottontail shown here was at a small water hole in Starr Co., Texas, in May, 2009. This shot was taken with a Canon EOS 50D and an EF 800mm F/5.6 L IS lens.
