The Greater Earless Lizard (Cophosaurus texanus) is a widespread southwestern lizard. It ranges across parts of Oklahoma, Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and southward into Mexico. It inhabits a variety of habitats from desert to some montane scrub. There are several recognized subspecies. The first two photos show what is probably the Chihuahuan or Southwestern Earless Lizard (C. t. scitulus) while the pale form in the lower two shots is probably the Texas Earless Lizard (C. t. texanus). The first two shots were digital captures in the Chinati Mountains, Presidio Co., Texas, in September, 2005 with a Canon EOS 1D Mark II and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 580 flash. The bottom two shots were taken in Bandera Co., Texas, in May, 2005 with the same equipment.
The Greater Earless Lizard in the next 4 shots was in Sabino Canyon, Tucson, Pima Co., Arizona, in May, 2008. These shots were taken with a Canon EOS 1D Mark III and EF 300mm F/4 L IS lens and 2X extender. In two of the shots the lizard is seen standing up on its tip toes, apparently to avoid the heat of the sun baked rock.
